What Profile18 is
Profile18 confirms that a real, adult person is behind the screen. A business sends someone to us, we check a government photo ID against a live selfie, and we report back a name and an age. The business never handles the document.
Who runs it
Profile18 is operated by ROMbug, a software company based in Vermont, USA. It was built because the businesses we were already running needed a way to know their users were real adults, and the existing options were priced for companies far larger than ours.
What makes it different
Age-estimation models guess, and they guess worst at exactly the boundary that matters. We read the number instead.
No permanent face database is created. The business that sent you receives a decision and a name, and nothing else.
How to tell a real Profile18 check
Verification always begins from a link issued by a business you already deal with. We never contact people out of the blue. We never ask for a password, a payment card, or a bank detail. We never ask for anything by email. If something claiming to be Profile18 does any of those, it isn't us — tell us at profile18verified@protonmail.com.
